Cros de Cagnes, Sea and Mountains, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1910 captures a sweeping view over the Mediterranean bay at Cros de Cagnes, with a cluster of white-walled houses along the shoreline and the pale, sun-hazed mountains of the Provençal hinterland rising beyond. Painted from the hillside near his home at Cagnes-sur-Mer, where the artist settled in 1908 to ease the effects of rheumatoid arthritis, the work belongs to a series of loosely brushed coastal views from Renoir's final decade, rendered in the soft, atmospheric palette that defined his late southern period.
