Cliffs at Pourville, painted by Claude Monet in 1896 renders the chalk cliffs above Pourville dissolved in a soft, misty haze, the headland, sea, and sky reduced to overlapping veils of pale green and grey. Monet returned to this stretch of Norman coastline more than a decade after his first campaign there, this time pursuing atmosphere and light rather than the sharper detail of his earlier views. The painting belongs to a small late series in which the artist studied the cliffs of Pourville under shifting fog and weather.
