Cliffs on the Coast near Pourville, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1879 depicts the white chalk cliffs of the Normandy coast falling away toward a hazy blue sea, with a lone figure in white seated in the grass on the clifftop, hat tilted against the light. Painted during Renoir's mature Impressionist years, the work captures the same dramatic Pourville coastline near Dieppe that drew Monet and other Impressionists to Normandy, rendered here in Renoir's characteristically soft, luminous brushwork and pastel-toned atmosphere.
Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1879.
