Cabin of the Customs Watch (Cabane des douaniers), painted by Claude Monet in 1882 depicts the small stone watch-cabin on the Petit-Ailly cliff between Pourville and Varengeville, one of roughly fourteen canvases Monet devoted to this single motif that year. The cabin’s fixed silhouette gave him a stable anchor against which to study the constantly shifting sea light and weather of the Norman coast, an investigation that would deepen into his celebrated series paintings of the following decade.
