By the River at Vernon (Le Bord de l’eau à Vernon), painted by Claude Monet in 1883 depicts the church tower and quayside houses of the small Norman market town of Vernon, their forms mirrored in the still waters of the Seine. Monet painted the canvas in the summer just weeks after settling at nearby Giverny, one of the first works in which he began studying the river valley that would anchor the rest of his career.
