Bordighera, painted by Claude Monet in 1884 depicts the hillside town on the Italian Riviera as seen through a dense screen of wind-twisted pine and olive branches, framing the distant rooftops and the brilliant blue of the Mediterranean beyond. Monet travelled to the Ligurian coast in early 1884 after an initial visit with Renoir, working intensively to capture the saturated southern light and sub-tropical vegetation that marked a notable departure from his earlier Normandy palette. The canvas belongs to Monet's celebrated Italian Riviera campaign and today hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.
