Bleaching Ground at Scheveningen, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1882, captures an open coastal field near The Hague where linen was laid out to whiten in the sun, with small figures moving among the drying cloth beneath a wide, changeable sky. Rendered swiftly on the spot in watercolor and gouache, the work shows Van Gogh testing his growing skill at capturing atmosphere and light, an approach shaped by the naturalist Hague School painters he studied and admired during this early period. It is among the works that mark his transition from draughtsman to painter of the Dutch landscape.
