Drawn in 1882 during Van Gogh's Hague period, Behind the House of Sien captures the cramped back-garden view glimpsed from the rooms he shared with Sien Hoornik on the Schenkweg. The composition is rendered in patient pencil and ink lines, building shadow, weathered fence, and figures in the alley with restrained tonal control. Van Gogh produced these intimate domestic studies while training himself as a draftsman under Anton Mauve, drawing constantly from the working-class quarter that surrounded him.
