Behind the House of Sien, drawn by Vincent van Gogh in 1882, depicts the cramped back garden and weathered wooden fence behind the Schenkweg house he shared with Sien Hoornik and her family in The Hague. Rendered in pencil, ink, and gouache, the drawing shows Van Gogh disciplining his eye and hand under the guidance of his cousin-in-law Anton Mauve, building form through patient tonal shading rather than outline. It belongs to a series of intimate domestic studies from his Hague period that reveal his early, deeply felt commitment to depicting ordinary working-class life.
