Water Lily Pond, the Roses, painted by Claude Monet in 1913, looks across the surface of Monet’s celebrated water garden at Giverny toward a rose-covered arch, its blossoms and the surrounding foliage mirrored in the still pond among drifting water lilies. The canvas belongs to the great water-lily series of Monet’s later Giverny years, when he devoted himself almost exclusively to the pond he had created on his property, its reflections, and the roses lining its banks. Painted in the loose, richly colored brushwork of his final decades, the work is counted among the foundational images of twentieth-century modern painting.
