The Basin at Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 depicts the tree-lined promenade along the Seine, where sailboats rest at anchor beneath a luminous, cloud-filled sky as a road bridge with its toll pavilions closes the distance. Painted soon after Monet settled in this riverside town northwest of Paris, the work belongs to a series of more than fifty views he made of the Argenteuil basin between 1872 and 1875, a body of work that helped define the emerging Impressionist style.
