Barges on the Seine, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1869, depicts a bend of the river near Argenteuil with working barges drifting past wooded banks beneath a wide, cloud-filled sky. Renoir renders the water and sky in loose, luminous strokes of blue and grey-white, letting the reflected light animate the entire surface of the canvas. Painted at the very outset of Impressionism, the work shows Renoir working outdoors alongside Monet and Sisley to capture the everyday commercial life of the Seine with a new freshness and immediacy.
