Banks of the Seine, Vétheuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1880, depicts a dense band of wildflowers, daisies and yellow blossoms among tall grasses, along the riverbank, with the Seine winding past a distant line of poplar trees under a soft grey sky. Painted outdoors near the small Norman village where Monet lived from 1878 to 1881, the work belongs to a series of riverside studies from his Vétheuil years that pushed his brushwork toward a looser, more atmospheric handling of color and light.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1880.
