Banks of the Seine near Vétheuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1881, looks out across the broad curve of the river toward the ridge of hills beyond, with flowering tamarisk bushes and tall grasses filling the foreground beneath a bright, cloud-filled sky. The canvas was painted during Monet’s final months at Vétheuil, where he had lived since 1878 and produced close to two hundred views of the river and surrounding countryside. By 1881 Monet’s brushwork had grown looser and his palette brighter, anticipating the confident handling of light that would define his subsequent Poissy and Giverny years.
