The Banks of the Seine, Champrosay, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876, depicts a quiet bend of the river near the country estate of the writer Alphonse Daudet, with tall grasses and shrubs along the near bank giving way to a broad expanse of blue-grey water and a distant, cloud-filled sky. Renoir's feathery, rapid brushwork favours atmosphere and light over incident, placing this canvas among the great series of Seine river views that he and Monet painted together in the mid-1870s. The work is a fine example of Renoir's more lyrical, plein-air landscape painting and now hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
