Ball-Shaped Tree, Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1876, looks across the Seine from Le Petit Gennevilliers toward the lower promenade at Argenteuil, where a round, sculpted tree stands beside a white villa whose façade and the warm colors of the evening sky are mirrored on the still water. Rather than the sailboats and bridges of his better-known Argenteuil riverscapes, Monet composes the view in flattened, horizontal bands of house, foliage, and reflection, an arrangement he admired in Japanese woodblock prints. Painted near the end of his years at Argenteuil, the canvas captures the prosperous riverside villas that drew fashionable Parisians to the town each summer.
