Bal du Moulin de la Galette, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876, captures a sun-dappled Sunday afternoon at the popular open-air dance garden in Montmartre, with couples waltzing beneath the trees and a relaxed group of friends seated in the foreground. Renoir's flickering brushwork breaks the sunlight into patches of gold and blue across the crowd's straw hats and dark suits, giving the whole scene a shimmering, festive immediacy. Painted at the height of Impressionism, it is now considered one of the movement's supreme masterpieces and hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
