Autumn Effect at Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1873, captures the Seine and the riverside town of Argenteuil ablaze with the warm oranges and golds of autumn foliage, its church tower and factory chimney visible in the distance across the still, reflective water. Painted from Monet’s studio boat on a quiet side channel, the work is one of the most celebrated of his Argenteuil-period landscapes and was shown at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1876, where its vivid color drew both praise and criticism.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1873.
