Apples and Grapes, painted by Claude Monet in 1879-80, depicts a woven basket brimming with dark grapes and red-green apples set atop a rumpled white tablecloth, with scattered walnuts and loose apples nearby, rendered in the loose, richly textured brushwork of his mature Impressionist style. Working through a stretch of bad weather that kept him indoors at Vétheuil, Monet turned to a series of tabletop still lifes he believed would be more readily marketable than his landscapes, applying the same attention to shifting light and texture that defined his outdoor scenes.
