Apple and Pear, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1909-11, sets a single ripe pear and a single apple side by side on a white draped tablecloth against a warm reddish backdrop, the fruit modeled in the soft, glowing brushwork of his very late career. The small still life belongs to the intimate domestic studies Renoir painted throughout his life, here pared down to a quiet pairing of two humble pieces of fruit rendered with rich, fleshy color. By this date Renoir was working from a wheelchair at his home in the south of France, and this late still life is prized for its serene simplicity and luminous, warm palette.
