Antibes, Afternoon Effect (Antibes, effet d’après-midi), painted by Claude Monet in 1888 frames a solitary maritime pine leaning in from the left across a luminous view of the bay, with the snow-capped Maritime Alps rising beyond the calm Mediterranean water. Monet stayed at Antibes from January to May of that year, producing some thirty-six canvases of the bay and its surrounding pines and gardens, a series that proved both a critical and financial success when exhibited later that year.
