Algerian Landscape: Ravine de la Femme Sauvage, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, captures a sun-dazzled ravine near Algiers thick with agave, palmetto, and wild scrub, rendered directly from nature in short, mosaic-like touches of ochre, green, and dusty blue. Renoir painted the work during his 1881 journey to Algeria, made in pursuit of the strong southern light that Delacroix had famously brought back from the same region a generation earlier. The painting, now in the Musée d'Orsay, belongs to the small, vivid group of Algerian landscapes that mark Renoir's shift toward the warmer palette and firmer drawing of his classical period.
