A Road in Louveciennes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1870, looks down a dappled country lane on the edge of the village of Louveciennes, small figures walking beneath scattered trees under a soft, cloud-filled summer sky. The painting belongs to the great cluster of Louveciennes landscapes that Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley all painted in the early years of Impressionism, when the village's lanes and gardens became one of the movement's defining motifs. Now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the work shows Renoir at his most lyrical, the road and figures bathed in the warm, naturalistic light that defined early Impressionist landscape painting.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: c. 1870.
