A Kneeling Peasant Woman in Front of a Hut, drawn by Vincent van Gogh in 1883, shows a peasant woman crouched beside a basket in front of a weathered, thatch-roofed turf cottage, rendered in somber earth tones of umber, black, and grey wash. The drawing dates from Van Gogh’s brief but formative stay in the remote peat-lands of Drenthe, where he sought out laborers and cottagers to draw directly from life. Its quiet, muted realism reflects his early devotion, inspired by Jean-François Millet, to depicting the dignity of rural poverty before his palette brightened in Nuenen and Paris.
