Painted in December 1888 in Arles, Vincent van Gogh's The Dance Hall at Arles presents the crowded interior of a popular dance venue, the figures packed together in the glare of artificial light rendered in the bold, flat colour areas and summary forms of his most avant-garde Arles manner. The work reflects his interest during this period in Japanese-influenced simplification and the use of colour as a purely expressive rather than descriptive tool, the bright greens, yellows, and blacks of the interior creating a festive yet psychologically charged atmosphere. Now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, it is among the most distinctive and compositionally inventive of his Arles figure paintings. A boldly modern and visually exciting work for any interior that celebrates the full range of Van Gogh's Arles period.
