Painted in December 1888 in Arles, Vincent van Gogh's Dance Hall in Arles presents the crowded interior of a popular Arlesian dance venue, the press of figures and the glare of artificial light rendered in the bold, flat colour areas and decisive outlines of his most avant-garde Arles manner. The work — now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris — reflects his interest in Japanese-influenced simplification and the use of colour as a purely expressive tool, the vivid greens and yellows of the interior creating a festive, almost hallucinatory atmosphere. It is among the most compositionally inventive and stylistically radical of his Arles figure paintings. A boldly modern and visually exciting work for any considered interior.
