La Nuit étoilée, vers 1889, de Vincent van Gogh représente un ciel nocturne tourbillonnant d’étoiles lumineuses et d’un croissant de lune éclatant au-dessus d’un paisible village perché sur une colline, avec un cyprès sombre aux formes semblables à des flammes s’élevant au premier plan. Van Gogh, postimpressionniste néerlandais (1853–1890), l’a peinte alors qu’il était interné à l’asile de Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, près de Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, et elle demeure l’œuvre la plus célèbre de sa carrière.
